Explosion

Remembering the Fremont hotel explosion of 50 years ago reminded us of the loss of our onetime neighbor on South 39th Street. Mrs. Swearingen, the wife of Rev. Swearingen, was among the 20 killed.

Swearingens were living at 3007 when we moved to 3003 in 1959. The explosion was on Jan. 10, 1976, well after Rev. Swearingen had left First Presbyterian Church in Omaha to take a Fremont pastorate. In a coincidence, Jan. 10 [2023] is date of wife Sarah’s death.

Mayor Ewing added a reminder Jan. 15 of this year by declaring 2026 the Year of the Neighbor.
