Mike Patterson to Retire After 38 Years With The World-Herald

World-Herald sportswriter Mike Patterson will retire after the College World Series.

He has spent 42 years of writing about sports teams — four with the Nonpareil in Council Bluffs and 38 with The World-Herald.

This is what columnist Tom Shatel wrote in The World-Herald Feb. 5:

“What the Roncalli and UNO grad has covered, with precision and class—

“UNO sports. All of ‘em.

“Hockey. Three teams. UNO, the Lancers and Ak-sar-ben Knights.

“High school sports. All of ‘em.

“State colleges. All of ‘em.

“Horse racing in the state (mainly Ak-Sar-Ben).

“College World Series in June. American Legion baseball the rest of the summer. Also, the Omaha Royals and Storm Chasers.

“The Omaha Supernovas and League One Nebraska.”
